Transitional Kindergarten

What is Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?

Transitional Kindergarten is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten for children turning 5 years of age between September 2 and December 2.  This program offers young learners a head start and provides them with a golden opportunity to learn and grow in an environment  tailored to meet their academic and social needs.

Important facts about Transitional Kindergarten 

  • TK is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program.
  • TK is free for families as part of the public school system.
  • TK uses a unique, specialized curriculum that is based on kindergarten standards.
  • TK is designed to support "young" five-year-olds. 
  • TK is taught by credentialed teachers with extra training.

TRANSITIONAL KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION

Transitional Kindergarten (TK) registration takes place at the Educational Support Services Office, located at 2080 Mission Ave.  Priority registration is the first two weeks of May.  To participate in priority registration, visit the ESS office to fill out the application form choosing the top three schools you are interested in having your child attend.  You must bring 2 proofs of residency within OUSD boundaries (lease agreement or mortgage statement, utility bill, cable/Directv, homeowner or renter insurance, phone bill [landline only - no cell]) with you to apply, but your residential address will not be used to determine placement.  Notifications of placement will be mailed out mid-May.  Registration instructions will be provided to you with your approved placement letter. Parents not participating in priority registration can choose from the remaining TK openings.  Your child must turn five years old between Sep. 2 and Dec. 2, 2017 to be age eligible.
